Background of the study
Effective communication is a fundamental right in education, yet hearing-impaired students often face significant barriers in accessing instructional content. At the University of Maiduguri, the implementation of a multimedia-based sign language interpretation system promises to bridge the communication gap by providing real-time sign language translations of lectures and instructional materials. This system leverages advanced video processing, animation, and interactive multimedia technologies to convert spoken language into sign language using digital avatars and pre-recorded interpretations (Adeola, 2023). The use of multimedia not only facilitates visual learning but also ensures that hearing-impaired students can engage with content at the same pace as their peers. Real-time translation capabilities enable the system to adapt to live lectures, thereby enhancing inclusivity and promoting equal educational opportunities (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the system can archive translated content for later review, supporting continuous learning and revision. Despite its potential, the deployment of such a system faces challenges including high costs, technical complexities in real-time video processing, and the need for extensive customization to accommodate different dialects and educational terminologies. Furthermore, ensuring the accuracy and naturalness of the sign language output is crucial to avoid misinterpretation and communication breakdowns. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a multimedia-based sign language interpretation system tailored for the University of Maiduguri. It will assess the system’s effectiveness in enhancing communication, engagement, and academic performance among hearing-impaired students, while also identifying barriers to its successful implementation (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Hearing-impaired students at the University of Maiduguri face significant challenges due to the lack of effective communication aids in instructional settings. Traditional methods, such as written notes or occasional sign language interpreters, are insufficient for continuous and real-time engagement during lectures. The absence of a dedicated, multimedia-based sign language interpretation system results in communication gaps that hinder academic performance and social integration. Although technology offers a promising solution, the implementation of real-time sign language translation through multimedia systems is fraught with technical, financial, and operational challenges. High initial costs, the complexity of integrating real-time video translation with educational content, and the need for accurate, context-sensitive sign language conversion are significant barriers. Additionally, the variability in sign language dialects and the need for ongoing updates to the system to reflect evolving educational terminology further complicate its deployment. These factors contribute to a learning environment where hearing-impaired students are at a disadvantage, impeding their academic progress and overall inclusion. This study seeks to address these issues by developing a robust multimedia-based sign language interpretation system, evaluating its effectiveness in real-time educational settings, and identifying critical factors that impact its usability and sustainability (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To develop a multimedia-based sign language interpretation system tailored for educational settings.

  2. To evaluate its impact on communication and academic performance among hearing-impaired students.

  3. To identify and propose solutions to technical and operational challenges.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the multimedia system in translating spoken language into sign language in real time?

  2. What are the key technical challenges in implementing such a system?

  3. How can the system be optimized to accommodate diverse sign language dialects?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for accessible education for hearing-impaired students by implementing a cutting-edge multimedia-based sign language interpretation system. The findings will inform educators and policymakers on best practices for technology integration in inclusive education, enhancing communication and academic outcomes for hearing-impaired learners (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the implementation of a multimedia-based sign language interpretation system at the University of Maiduguri. Limitations include high development costs, technical integration issues, and variability in sign language dialects.

Definitions of terms

  • Sign Language Interpretation System: A digital tool that translates spoken language into sign language using multimedia technologies.

  • Multimedia: The integration of various digital media forms such as video, audio, and animation.

  • Real-Time Translation: The immediate conversion of speech into another language or form as it is spoken.
